What is spaced repetition, and why does it actually work?

I used to think forgetting was a memory problem. Like some people just have a leaky brain and others don't, and I was one of the leaky ones.

Turns out forgetting isn't a flaw. It's the default setting for everyone, and it happens on a schedule you can actually predict. The bad news is that schedule is faster than you think. The good news is that if you know the schedule, you can beat it with almost no extra work.

The forgetting curve is not a metaphor

In the 1880s a psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus memorised nonsense syllables and tested himself over and over to see how much he'd lost. The result is a curve that drops fast at first and then levels off, and it's been replicated so many times it's basically a law of how brains work.

The practical version: if you learn something today and never touch it again, you'll have lost most of it within a week. Not because you didn't learn it properly. Because one exposure was never going to be enough, for anyone.

This is why re-reading your notes the night before an exam feels productive and mostly isn't. You're reading things you've already forgotten most of, and recognising them again feels like knowing them. It isn't the same thing.

Spacing beats cramming, and it isn't close

Spaced repetition means reviewing something right as you're about to forget it, rather than right after you learned it. That timing is the entire trick. Review too soon and you're just re-reading something you still remember, which wastes the review. Review too late and you've already lost it, which means you're relearning instead of reinforcing.

Hit it at the edge of forgetting and something different happens. The recall is harder, which feels worse in the moment, but that difficulty is what strengthens the memory. Easy review barely moves anything. Effortful recall rebuilds the connection stronger than it was.

Studies comparing spaced review to cramming for the same total study time consistently find spacing wins, and not by a little. The kicker is that cramming often feels better while you're doing it, because everything's fresh and easy to recognise. That feeling is the trap. It tells you you're learning right up until the exam, when it turns out you weren't.

A schedule you can actually run

You don't need flashcard software with a spaced repetition algorithm to do this, though it helps. The basic version:

  • Day 1: learn it.
  • Day 2 or 3: review it. This is the first and hardest gap.
  • Day 7: review again.
  • Day 16 or so: review again.
  • Day 35 or so: review again.

Each gap roughly doubles. That's not an arbitrary number, it's close to what the research on optimal spacing suggests, though the exact ratio matters far less than the habit of spacing at all.

The part people get wrong is trying to review everything on the same schedule. Some material you'll nail on the first review and can push out further. Some you'll blank on completely and need to see again tomorrow, not in a week. A rigid calendar doesn't know the difference. A deck of flashcards that tracks what you got right and wrong does, which is most of what a proper spaced repetition tool is actually for.

Why this pairs with active recall, not reading

Spacing tells you when to review. It doesn't tell you how, and how matters just as much. If your review is rereading the same page, you get a small benefit from the spacing and nothing from the difficulty, because rereading isn't difficult.

The review has to be active: closing the material and trying to produce the answer, not recognise it. That's the whole idea behind active recall, and it's why flashcards work as well as they do for this specifically. A good card asks a question you have to answer from memory before you flip it. A bad card is basically a highlighted sentence, which teaches you nothing you didn't already half know.

Where this actually breaks down for people

The honest problem with spaced repetition isn't the theory, it's the logistics. You have to track what you learned and when, remember to come back to it, and have decent flashcards to review with in the first place. Doing this by hand in a notebook works for a week and then quietly stops.

Forgetting isn't a sign you didn't learn something. It's what happens to everything you only saw once. Space your review at increasing gaps, make each review an actual recall rather than a reread, and the material sticks with a fraction of the total hours cramming would've taken.
